4 Easy Auto Maintenance Tips for a Longer Vehicle Life

Your vehicle is a big investment, so it makes sense to try and get as many miles out of it as possible. By performing a few small maintenance procedures and following these simple driving tips you'll help your car, truck or SUV continue to have a healthy roadlife, taking you everywhere you want to go. Aside from these following tips there is one thing you must never do, skip or put off oil changes. Fresh oil is necessary for proper engine lubrication but it also helps regulate engine temperature and draining old oil removes gunk from inside the engine. By keeping up with regular oil changes and following these auto maintenance tips your car will drive better, longer, and maintain optimum miles per gallon.

Replace your Air Filter

Your air filter cleans the air that mixes with gasoline to ensure your engine runs properly. If the filter gets dirty it means that the engine is not going to get enough air and it will compensate by burning excessive amounts of gasoline, which is called running rich. Besides being a waste of gas this can cause other issues within the engine which will eventually require expensive engine repair.

Slow Down!

The faster you drive the harder your engine has to work. Most vehicles get their best fuel mileage between 55 and 60 miles per hour, which is also a common freeway speed limit. For every five miles per hour you drive above that your fuel efficiency will drop drastically.

Avoid Warming Up

What is the best way to get zero miles per gallon? Just turn your car on and don't go anywhere. If your vehicle requires more than a minute or two, if that, to be ready to drive there is likely a bigger issue with the vehicle and it should be taken to a local auto mechanic for proper diagnostics and repair.

Replace Old Spark Plugs

Spark plugs are fed electricity to create a small explosion which ignites the air/fuel mixture that pumps the pistons up and down inside an internal combustion engine. The resulting motion is what powers your vehicle to move. If the spark plugs are miss-gapped, dirty or corroded they will misfire. Since spark plugs fire millions of times for every 1,000 miles traveled a misfire can be a huge waste of fuel and it causes the engine to work harder than necessary. Dirty spark plugs can also cause a rough idle and may cause vehicle stalling.
