4 Signs it's Time for Suspension Repair
Your vehicle's suspension system is incredibly important not only for increased ride comfort, but for making your vehicle safe to drive. While the suspension is absorbing all of the bumps in the road it is also ensuring that all four tires remain on the ground to provide you with adequate braking power when you need it. It is also tasked with keeping your vehicle upright when going around corners. If you experience any of the following signs that your suspension needs repair be sure to get to the local auto shop as soon as possible.
One corner of the car is low
A common sign that suspension components have failed in one corner of your vehicle is if one corner sits lower than the rest but the tire appears to be properly inflated. This problem will cause increased tire wear as well as result in your vehicle drifting to the side as you drive if you do not correct the issue.
Oil on the struts
The struts, which are a main part of the suspension, utilize a special oil in order to absorb the unevenness of the road. If the struts crack or if the oil begins to leak you'll likely notice a much stiffer ride. Check the struts by rubbing them with a rag to see if they are leaking any sort of oil. If they are you will likely need to have them replaced in order to restore the comfort and safety of your drive.
Roll over sensation
A very scary sign that your suspension is in need of repair is if it feels as if your vehicle is going to roll over as you go around a corner. This indicates that the anti-sway bar has failed or is failing. This part is responsible for shifting the vehicle's center of gravity while cornering in order to prevent it from toppling over on its side.
If your car tends to bounce around a lot while driving down the road and you suspect suspension problems there is a quick test that you can perform to test your hypothesis. Simply push on the hood or trunk of the vehicle to get it to start bouncing up and down at a fairly rapid rate. Once you stop pushing the car should return to its normal ride height and stop bouncing after 3 to 4 bounces. Anymore than that and it is likely you will need to replace your springs or shocks.
