5 Serious Signs of Brake Trouble
When it comes to safety nothing is more important than your brake system. Your vehicle is equipped with a very modern, high-tech system that allows you to easily stop it by simply pressing your foot on a pedal. When you think about it, it is actually quite ingenious. However, the brakes do wear and they need regular maintenance to ensure the system remains reliable. If you experience any of the following signs of brake failure head to an auto repair shop right away.
Vehicles are equipped with numerous sensors that can detect problems on all of the car's different systems. This includes the brakes, and if the sensors notice that something is amiss it will illuminate the dashboard indicator light for the brakes, which generally reads ABS, which stands for anti-lock brake system.
One of the first things you may notice if it's time for brake repair is also probably the most common sign of trouble. Grinding or squealing noises that occurs when you apply the brakes indicate that the brake pads are heavily worn and need to be replaced. The sound you're hearing is metal grinding on metal.
Soft Brake Pedal
If your brake pedal now seems to rest closer to the floor or seems as if you need to push it harder to get a reaction from the brakes there's a good chance that your brake pads are worn and need to be replaced. However this can also be caused by air in the brake lines or even a brake fluid leak.
When you apply the brakes your vehicle should continue in a straight line. If it seems to pull to the left or right it may mean that there is uneven brake pad wear occurring. This is a control issue which needs to be corrected as soon as possible. A stuck or malfunctioning wheel cylinder may also cause this issue!
A car that shakes and vibrates during braking likely has warped rotors. The rotors are what the brake pads grab in order to create the friction that slows the vehicle. They can become warped due to excessive heat created under harsh braking conditions. Warped rotors will greatly reduce your braking power.
