Common reasons the check engine light comes on

Common reasons the check engine light comes onMany people think that if the check engine light comes on they are definitely in for an expensive repair, or their car may as well just be sent to the scrapper. This just isn't the case! The little light is actually doing you a big favor by turning on as many of the problems that trigger it are fairly simple issues that can be resolved quick and inexpensively. However, if you don't head to the auto shop right away the problem will definitely grow worse, which can indeed result in a need for more extensive and expensive repair services. The following are 5 of the most common reasons the check engine light will illuminate.

Broken or loose gas cap

The best case scenario is the light turning on simply because you forgot to tighten the gas cap the last time you filled up. If the gas cap is loose or does not seal properly it can allow for gasoline vapors to evaporate out of the filler hose, causing the EVAP system to trigger the check engine light.

Corroded spark plugs

The spark plugs are what ignite the air and fuel mixture inside of the combustion chamber. The tiny explosion this causes is what powers the pistons up and down. If the spark plugs are misfiring, meaning they go off at the wrong time, the light will turn on. While this can be a huge waste of fuel, you'll likely know there is an issue without the light as this will cause the motor to run very poorly.

Failed MAF sensor

The mass airflow (MAF) sensor is part of the air intake system. It measures the amount of incoming air and calculates how much needs to be mixed with the gas in the combustion chamber to create the proper air and fuel mixture to ensure the engine runs properly. A failed sensor often results in a vehicle running rich, meaning it will burn excessive gasoline, which decreases MPGs and can damage the catalytic converter.

Malfunctioning O2 sensor

On the other end of the car is the oxygen (O2) sensor. It is located in the exhaust system and measures how much oxygen is in the exhaust to also calculate the proper air and fuel mix. Again, if this sensor fails it could result in the car's engine running rich.

Failed catalytic converter

If problems with the O2 or MAF sensor are not fixed it could result in the catalytic converter failing. This is one of the most expensive parts on a car to replace, but it won't fail without smaller issues occurring first. This is the reason why it is so important to ensure you always have check engine light diagnostics ran as soon as the light comes on.
