5 Signs it is Time for Brake Repair
When it comes to vehicle safety, there is nothing that is as important as the brakes. Yes, the airbags and seatbelts are vital in the event of an accident, but it is the brakes that can prevent that accident from ever occurring. Should you ever notice any of the following signs of brake trouble be sure to contact your local auto repair shop for service as soon as possible. Remember, it is up to you to keep your car safe to drive.
A grinding or squealing noise that occurs when you hit the brake pedal generally indicates that the brake pads have worn thin and are in need of replacement. The noise you are hearing is metal grinding on metal. If the pads are not replaced within a reasonable amount of time, more serious damage could occur to the brake system parts.
Soft brake pedal
If your car's brake pedal now rests closer to the floor, or you have to push it farther toward the floor to get a response from the brakes, a trip to the shop is in your near future. This may indicate low brake pads, but it could be a much more serious issue, such as air in the brake lines or a brake fluid leak.
When you hit the brakes your vehicle should continue in a straight line. If your car pulls left or right when the brakes are applied it probably means that uneven wear is occurring in the pads. This can also be caused by a malfunctioning wheel cylinder or contaminated brake fluid.
Vibrations when braking
Can you feel the brake pedal vibrating as you slow down? This may mean you have warped rotors. Rotors are what the brake pads grab in order to create the friction that slows your vehicle. If the they are warped it means the surface area between the pads and rotors is reduced, thus decreasing your braking power.
The brake's equivalent to the check engine light is the ABS light. ABS stands for anti-lock braking system. Should this light illuminate it is imperative that you head to the auto repair shop for proper diagnostics and repair.
