Driving Habits that are Bad for Your Car
For many people a car is simply a tool to get from A to B, which in reality is exactly what it is for. However, if you want to ensure that your vehicle continues to provide you with reliable transportation for years to come without having to schedule unnecessary repairs, be sure that you don't participate in any of these bad driving habits. By being a tentative, smart driver, you can keep your car in top-notch shape, which means less repairs and more reliability and efficiency.
Not using the parking brake
There is a reason that cars have parking brakes, which is to help relieve stress placed on the transmission when the vehicle is parked, especially on hills. If you don't use the parking brake the weight of the vehicle will be placed on a small part of the transmission called the parking pawl. It can wear out or break, which could result in disaster if you park on a hill.
Resting your foot on the clutch pedal
If you keep your foot on the clutch pedal as you drive you're going to cause damage to the clutch components, as you're causing the clutch to always be partially engaged. You can also increase wear to the clutch surfaces if you keep the clutch pedal decreased while at a stop.
Not only will rapid acceleration result in excessive use of fuel, but it places a ton of stress on the internal parts of the engine. If you are the type to put the pedal to the metal every time the light turns green you can expect to be driving to the auto shop sooner than later for some engine diagnostics and repair.
With hard acceleration often comes hard braking. This is going to quickly wear down your car's braking components and result in damage to the system resulting in a need for premature brake repair.
Ignoring warning signs
There are plenty of warning signs your car may give you if it is experiencing issues operating. This includes weird smells, odd noises and of course dashboard indicator lights, such as the check engine light. Don't ignore warning signs of car trouble, as it could lead to a breakdown and big repairs.
