Top Problems that Prevent Starting

Top Problems that Prevent StartingWhen it comes to car trouble few things are as frustrating as a vehicle that will not start. If there is any good news about a car that won't start is that the issue is generally easy to diagnose. Depending on what happens when you turn the key you can often tell what is preventing you from getting up and running. The following are a few of the most common issues that prevent cars from starting.

No Gas

First off, is there gas in the tank? If there is and your car engine still cranks over and over without firing up then there may be a fuel delivery issue. The most common reasons fuel can't get to the combustion chamber are a clogged fuel filter, a malfunctioning fuel injection unit or a failing fuel pump.

Dead Battery

If you turn the key and nothing happens there is a good chance that the battery is dead. While batteries can die and need to be replaced after a few years of service it is very common for them to be drained of their power due to leaving the lights on. Other things that can drain the battery include playing the radio when the engine isn't running or leaving a door ajar. In this case you can usually jump start the car and be on your way.

Failed Alternator

The alternator is what recharges the battery after each time it starts the car. The alternator actually creates electricity to power electrical components while the engine is running by utilizing the motion of the engine. Thanks to the alternator you can use power seats and windows, the radio and even your lights. Common signs of a failing alternator include slow starting and flickering headlights.

Malfunctioning Starter

The starter motor will often make a loud clicking noise when the key is turned if it is starting to fail. This little electric motor is designed to get the engine spinning so that combustion can occur and the engine can continue running on its own.
