What is that Sound My Car is Making?
Despite what you may hope, those strange knocking, buzzing and rattling sounds coming from your car are not going to fix themselves. It's important to pay attention to what your car is trying to tell you with these odd noises so that you don't end up stuck on the side of the road. If you can hear any weird sound coming from your car do not delay making a phone call to the auto shop to schedule diagnostics. Here are four common car problems that cause odd noises.
Whining Torque Converter
If the transmission has to operate with low transmission fluid major problems will occur, such as a failed torque converter. The most common issue with torque converters is damaged or worn out needle bearings, which arises due to low transmission fluid levels. If these needle bearings need to be serviced you will often hear a loud whizzing or grinding noise while your vehicle is in gear, but not when in neutral.
One of the more common problems that causes a loud vehicle is an exhaust leak. If your car's engine sounds a lot louder than normal, especially during acceleration, it is probably because a fault in the exhaust system. The exhaust system is designed to dampen engine noise, so any leaks will result in heightened volumes.
Failing Engine Bearings
The moving parts inside of the engine depend on engine bearings that require proper lubrication in order to do their job. The can become worn out due to high mileage or running the car with low oil levels. As they wear they will start to create a high volume knocking noise that rises and falls with the engine's RPMs. They will need to be serviced as soon as possible to avoid complete engine failure.
Low Brake Pads
If you hear a grinding or screeching noise when you hit the brakes it generally means it is time for new brake pads. Insufficient pad material can make stopping your car difficult, which is a major safety hazard. At the first sign of brake trouble be sure to visit your local auto repair shop.
